这个字由两样东西合成：一棵苗，一个跪着伸手的人。跪着伸手的那半边叫“丮”，商代的字里凡是双手做事的，多半用它。人和苗谁在左谁在右并不固定，苗在上、人在下的排法也常见，看的是手有没有伸到苗上。后来这个字上下又加了“土”，写成“埶”，再加草头就是“蓺”“藝”。《说文》说“埶，種也”，与甲骨文画的正对得上。要注意的是：字告诉我们商人蹲下来栽过东西，却没告诉我们栽的是什么——那得靠遗址里挖出来的种子来说。

Two things make this character: a young plant, and a kneeling person with the arms out. That kneeling, reaching half is called 丮, and Shang characters use it wherever two hands are doing the work. Which side the person takes is not fixed, and a stacked arrangement with the plant above and the person below is just as common; what matters is that the hands reach the plant. Later the character took an added 土 to become 埶, and with a grass top 蓺 and 藝. 說文 says “埶 is to plant”, which matches the oracle picture exactly. One caution: the character tells us a Shang person crouched to put something in the ground, but not what was put there — that question is settled by seeds dug out of the ground, not by the graph.
