上面两株苗，下面一件带柄的工具，一般认为那是“辰”，也就是用大蚌壳磨成的刀，用来割草、清地。所以甲骨文“农”画的是拿蚌刀在草木间开地，不是一个人的样子。到了西周金文，上面的草木常常换成“田”，字形就更像在田里干活了。《说文》把它分析成“从䢅，囟声”，那是按小篆字形来讲的。

Two plants above, a tool with a handle below — generally taken to be 辰, a blade ground from a big clam shell and used to cut grass and clear ground. So oracle-bone 農 pictures clearing land among the growth with a shell blade; there is no human figure in it. In Western Zhou bronze inscriptions the plants on top are often replaced by 田, which makes the picture read still more plainly as work in the fields. 說文 analyses the character as “from 䢅 with 囟 as the sound”, which follows the seal shape.
