现代古文字学者多认为这是翻土的农具（“耒”一类），那道短横就是踏脚的横木；“男”“耤”里都能看见同一件东西，正好互相印证。《说文》另有一说，把它讲成“筋也，象人筋之形”，就是人身上的筋肉。前一说占多数，但两说并存，所以图形解释标为“较可能”。

Most modern palaeographers take this for a digging tool of the 耒 type, the short bar being the tread the foot pushes on; the same object turns up inside 男 and 耤, which supports the reading. 說文 gives a different account — “a sinew; it pictures the sinews of a person”. The tool reading leads, but both are current, so the picture is graded as probable.
