多数学者认为这是一块密密种满庄稼的田：和“田”比一比，格子一样，多出来的是每格里的那一点，所以“周”有“稠密”的意思。另一种讲法（朱芳圃）把这些点看作刻在玉器上的花纹，认为“周”本是“琱”（雕）的初文，《汉语多功能字库》一类工具书就把这一说放在前面。有的写法把点全省掉，那时就只能靠辞例和“田”分开；因为两说并存，这里的图形解释标为“较可能”。

Most scholars read this as a field planted thick with crops: set it beside 田 and the squares are the same — what is extra is the mark inside each one, which is why 周 carries the sense “dense, thorough”. The other reading (朱芳圃) takes the marks for ornament incised on a jade and makes 周 the original graph behind 琱 “to carve”; reference works such as 漢語多功能字庫 put that account first. Some forms drop the marks altogether, and then only the wording of the inscription separates 周 from 田; because both readings are current, the picture is graded as probable.
