外面是围墙（“囗”），里面是几株张着叶子的小苗。和“周”比一比：“周”的格子里只点一小画，“囿”的格子里长的是能看出叶子的苗。卜辞里常问要不要去“囿”里打猎，可见那是围起来养着禽兽、种着树木的王家园子；《说文》说“苑有垣也”，正是这个意思。

The wall is the outer 囗; inside stand young plants with their leaves open. Compare 周: there each square holds only a small mark, while in 囿 you can see the leaves. The inscriptions repeatedly ask whether the king should hunt in the 囿, so it was a royal enclosure with game kept and trees planted in it — which is what 說文 means by “a garden with a wall”.
