甲骨文“生”就是“屮”加一条横线：横线是地面，草从地面长出来，所以是“生长”。和“屮”比，多的正是底下那一横；和“土”比，横线上面长的是草，不是土堆。《说文》也说它“象艸木生出土上”。

Oracle-bone 生 is 屮 plus a horizontal line: the line is the ground, and the plant comes up out of it — hence “to grow”. Against 屮 the extra element is exactly that bottom bar; against 土 what sits on the bar is a plant, not a mound of earth. 說文 says the same: 「象艸木生出土上」.
