甲骨文“岁”就是一把大斧：一边是弯弯的刃，一边是柄，柄上横着一道；刃上再加一两道短画，用来和只画斧子的“戉”分开。卜辞里“岁”常指用斧剖开牲体的祭祀，也用来数年份。《说文》说“岁”从步、戌声，讲的是小篆的样子，和甲骨文里这把斧子并不一样。

Oracle-bone 歲 is a big axe: the curved edge on one side, the haft on the other with a bar across it, and one or two short strokes added to the blade to keep it apart from 戉, which draws the axe alone. In the divinations 歲 names the rite of cutting a victim open with such an axe, and it also counts years. 《說文》 analyses the character as 步 with 戌 for sound, which describes the small-seal shape rather than the axe the oracle scribes cut.
