甲骨文“戉”把柄刻成一竖，把刃刻成挂在柄旁的一个弯环，柄的上端常加一横，下端有时再加一横当作足。和“戈”相比，“戈”的头是横着伸出的尖锋，“戉”的刃是圆弧形的一大片。

Oracle-bone 戉 cuts the shaft as a single upright and the blade as a curved loop hanging off its side; a bar usually crosses the top of the shaft and sometimes another marks the foot. Beside 戈, whose head is a straight point sticking out sideways, the blade of 戉 is one broad curve.
