甲骨文“宾”上面是“宀”，一个屋顶；下面是“人”，有的正面站着，有的侧着身子弯着腰。晚一些的写法在人脚边加“贝”，就写成今天“賓”的样子。卜辞里“宾”多用作动词：王“宾”某位先王，就是用待客的礼节迎接祖先的神灵。

Oracle-bone 賓 is 宀, a roof, over 人, a person — sometimes facing you, sometimes in profile with the back bent. Later forms add 貝, a cowrie, at the figure's feet, giving the shape we write today. In the divinations 賓 is mostly a verb: the king 賓 an ancestor, that is, receives the ancestor's spirit with the courtesies owed to a guest.
