“贝”画的是海贝壳口的样子：中间一条长缝，两边的小齿一道道刻出来。商代把海贝当钱用，所以后来“财”“买”“赏”这些字都带“贝”。《说文》说“古者货贝而宝龟”，讲的就是这件事。

貝 draws the mouth of a cowrie shell: one long slit down the middle with the little teeth cut along each side. The Shang used cowries as money, which is why 財, 買 and 賞 all carry 貝 later on. 說文 says as much: “in antiquity cowries were the currency and turtle shell the treasure”.
