“凤”是商人心目中最华丽的鸟：高冠、圆身、一把展开的长尾。四十九个字形里有二十一个在鸟旁加一个方框“凡”，那是声符，《说文》也说“凤，从鸟，凡声”。卜辞里还常借“凤”来写“风”，因为两个字读音相近。

鳳 is the most splendid bird the Shang drew: tall crest, round body, a fan of long tail feathers. Twenty-one of the forty-nine attested forms add the box-shaped 凡 beside the bird as a phonetic, the analysis 說文 gives too. In divination records 鳳 is also borrowed to write 風, “wind”, because the two sounded alike.
