甲骨文的“鸡”先是一幅画，头顶的鸡冠是别的鸟都没有的。十七个字形里有十四个又在鸡形旁边加上“奚”作声符，《说文》据此说“鸡，从隹，奚声”。这里画的是没有声符的那一类，鸡冠看得最清楚。
甲骨文的「雞」先是一幅畫，頭頂的雞冠是別的鳥都沒有的。十七個字形裡有十四個又在雞形旁邊加上「奚」作聲符，《說文》據此說「雞，从隹，奚聲」。這裡畫的是沒有聲符的那一類，雞冠看得最清楚。
Oracle-bone 雞 starts as a picture, and the comb on the head is something no other bird graph has. Fourteen of the seventeen attested forms add 奚 beside the bird as a phonetic, which is the analysis 說文 gives. The forms drawn here are the ones without it, where the comb shows most clearly.
