燕子的三个特点全刻出来了：张开的喙、平展的双翅、分叉的尾。《说文》的描写和字形一模一样——“籋口，布翄，枝尾”。和“鸟”“隹”比一比，那两个字画的是侧面站着的鸟，只有“燕”是正面张开翅膀的。

All three marks of a swallow are cut into the graph: the pincer beak, the spread wings, the forked tail — exactly what 說文 describes. 鳥 and 隹 both show a bird standing in profile; only 燕 faces you with its wings open.
