“麋”和“鹿”都是鹿，分别在头上：“鹿”头上是分叉像树枝的角，“麋”头上顶着一块又宽又平、中间带一道横的方块。现代古文字学者多把这一块释作“眉”，放在这里只管读音，所以“麋”是从“鹿”、“眉”声。《说文》按后来的字形把声符认成“米”，说“麋，鹿属，从鹿，米声”，还记下它“冬至解其角”。
「麋」和「鹿」都是鹿，分別在頭上：「鹿」頭上是分叉像樹枝的角，「麋」頭上頂著一塊又寬又平、中間帶一道橫的方塊。現代古文字學者多把這一塊釋作「眉」，放在這裡只管讀音，所以「麋」是從「鹿」、「眉」聲。《說文》按後來的字形把聲符認成「米」，說「麋，鹿屬，从鹿，米聲」，還記下它「冬至解其角」。
麋 and 鹿 are both deer; what sits on the head tells them apart. 鹿 carries antlers branching like a tree, while 麋 carries a broad flat block with one bar across it. Modern palaeographers mostly read that block as 眉 (eyebrow), here doing nothing but carrying the sound, so 麋 is 鹿 for the sense with 眉 for the sound. 說文, going by the later shape, takes the phonetic for 米 instead — “麋 belongs to the deer; from 鹿 with 米 as the phonetic” — and notes that it sheds its antlers at the winter solstice.
