兔的关键在一头一尾：上面两只长耳朵向后倒，后面一条短尾巴往上翘。和“犬”比一比，犬没有长耳朵，尾巴又长又卷。《说文》说兔“象踞，後其尾形”，讲的就是这条短尾巴。

A hare is told by its two ends: two long ears swept back at the front, a short tail flicked up at the rear. Next to 犬 the difference is plain — a dog has no long ears and its tail is long and curled. 說文 describes 兔 as “squatting, with its tail behind”, which is exactly that stub of a tail.
