“它”把整条蛇都画了出来：尖头、长身、弯尾，身上常刻菱形的鳞。后来“它”被借去当代词，人们才另造“蛇”字来写这条蛇。《说文》也说“它”就是蛇，“象冤曲垂尾形”。

它 draws the whole snake: pointed head, long body, curling tail, often with lozenge scales cut into it. The graph was later borrowed for the pronoun “it”, and 蛇 was written to keep the animal. 說文 also reads it as a snake, “showing the coiled body and hanging tail”.
