“黾”是正面俯视的青蛙：上面一个小圆头，下面一个鼓起的大肚子，四肢向外撑开。《说文》说“黾，鼃黾也”，就是青蛙，还说“黾头与它头同”——它的头和“它”（蛇）的头画法一样。

黽 is a frog seen from straight above: a small round head, a swollen belly below it, and four limbs braced outwards. 說文 glosses it simply as the frog, and adds that “the head of 黽 is the same as the head of 它” — the snake's head is drawn the same way.
