多数学者把这个字释作“夒”，就是猕猴一类的动物：头上一撮毛、一只手、一只脚，早期的写法还画出长长的尾巴。也有学者把它释作“夔”，读成商人祭祀的一位先祖的名号。两说并存，所以这里的图形解释标为“较可能”。《说文》说夒“一曰母猴，似人”。

Most scholars read this graph as 夒, a macaque-like animal: a tuft of hair on the head, one hand, one foot, and in the earliest forms a long tail as well. Others transcribe it 夔 and take it as the name of an ancestor the Shang sacrificed to. Both readings are alive, so the picture is graded “probable” here. 說文 says of 夒 that “one account calls it the macaque, which resembles a person”.
