《甲骨文编》把这个字形收在“狐”下：下面是一只犬类的兽，旁边另加一个小部件，一般认为是声符。不过卜辞里它只出现在田猎的记录中，所以也有学者认为它写的是别的兽名，因此这里的图形解释标为“较可能”。到小篆，“狐”写成从“犬”、“瓜”声；《说文》还说狐“死则丘首”。

《甲骨文編》 files this shape under 狐: a dog-like animal with one small extra part beside it, generally read as a phonetic. The word only ever turns up in hunting records, so some scholars read the graph as the name of a different beast — which is why the reading here is graded “probable”. By small seal the character is written 犬 with 瓜 as the phonetic; 說文 adds that a fox “dies with its head towards its own hill”.
