“万”本来画的是一只蝎子：举起的双螯、分节的肚子、末端带钩的尾。后来它被借去写数目“万”，借得太久，人们反而另造“虿”来写蝎子。《说文》还记着它的本义，说“万，虫也”。
「萬」本來畫的是一隻蠍子：舉起的雙螯、分節的肚子、末端帶鉤的尾。後來它被借去寫數目「萬」，借得太久，人們反而另造「蠆」來寫蠍子。《說文》還記著它的本義，說「萬，蟲也」。
萬 began as a scorpion: raised claws, a segmented belly, a tail hooking at the end. It was then borrowed to write the number ten thousand, and borrowed so thoroughly that 蠆 had to be written for the animal instead. 說文 still remembers the original: “萬 is a creeping creature”.
