“牢”是把牲口关起来的圈：外面一道围栏，里面一头牛。卜辞里“牢”指专门圈养、用来祭祀的牲口，一次可以用上几十头。圈里有时画的是羊，《甲骨文编》把这一类也收在“牢”下，后来的学者多把画羊的一形释作“宰”。《说文》说牢是“养牛马圈也”。

牢 is a pen with livestock shut inside it: a fence outside, an ox within. In the divination records 牢 means an animal specially penned and fattened for sacrifice, used dozens at a time. Sometimes a sheep is drawn inside instead; 《甲骨文編》 files those under 牢 as well, though later scholars mostly read the sheep form as a separate word, 宰. 說文 glosses 牢 as “the fold in which cattle and horses are kept”.
