“室”上面是屋顶“宀”，下面是“至”。“至”画一支箭落到地上，最下的一横就是地面，取“到了、停下来”的意思，所以屋里停下歇脚的地方就叫室。《说文》也说“室，实也。从宀，从至。至，所止也”。要和“宫”分开，就看屋顶底下画的是什么：宫是两个方框，室是一支箭。

室 is a roof (宀) over 至. 至 draws an arrow that has landed, the bottom bar being the ground, so it carries the sense “arrive, come to rest” — and the place in the house where you come to rest is a room. 說文 reads it the same way: “室 is 宀 with 至; 至 is where something stops.” To keep it apart from 宮, look at what is under the roof: two boxes for 宮, one arrow for 室.
