甲骨文“高”把一座建筑从上到下画齐：尖顶、小阁、宽台基，台基里那个朝上开口的凹形是门。《说文》说它“象台观高之形”，和甲骨字形对得上。它和“京”最容易混：高的台基是实的，里面留一个门洞；京的台面下面伸出几根柱子，里面没有门。

Oracle-bone 高 draws a whole building from top to bottom: pitched roof, small upper room, broad platform, and inside the platform an upward-opening notch for the doorway. 說文 reads it as “a picture of a tower standing high”, which fits the oracle graph. Its nearest neighbour is 京: 高 has a solid platform with a doorway in it, while 京 has posts running down below the platform and no door.
