“亳”的上半就是“高”的省写——尖顶、小阁、台面；下半那根带枝的直杆是“乇”。《说文》说“亳，京兆杜陵亭也。从高省，乇声”，把下半当作表音的部件，后人多沿用这个分析；不过《说文》讲的是小篆，甲骨文里这个符号到底是声符还是别的标记，还说不死，所以这里标为“较可能”。卜辞里“亳”是一个地名，商人在那里立有“亳社”；它是不是成汤所都的那个亳、在今天什么地方，学界一直有争论。

The top half of 亳 is a shortened 高 — peak, upper room, platform — and the branched shaft below is 乇. 說文 analyses it as “高 shortened, with 乇 for sound”, and later scholars have mostly followed that; but 說文 is describing the seal form, and whether the lower sign works as a sound in the oracle graph cannot be settled, so the badge here is “probable”. In the inscriptions 亳 is a place name, and the Shang kept an altar of the soil there; whether it is the Bo of King Tang, and where it lay, is still argued.
