甲骨文“宫”上面是屋顶“宀”，下面画两个方框，代表屋里相连的两间房。房间多，正是它和只有一间的“室”分别的地方。《说文》说它“从宀，躳省声”，那是汉代人按小篆字形给出的分析，甲骨文里看不出声符。

Oracle-bone 宮 is a roof (宀) with two boxes drawn under it — two connected rooms inside one house. The plural rooms are exactly what separates it from 室, which has one. 說文 analyses it as “宀 with a shortened 躳 for sound”, but that is a Han reading of the seal form; nothing in the oracle graph marks a sound.
