“升”的字形和“斗”几乎一样，只是勺里多一道短画。多数学者认为这道短画表示舀起来的东西，用来和“斗”分别；也有学者认为甲骨文里斗、升本是一个形体，后来才分成两个字。前一说较通行，所以图形解释标为较可能。《说文》说“升，十龠也。从斗，亦象形”。

升 is written almost exactly like 斗, except for one short stroke inside the scoop. Most scholars take that stroke to stand for what has been scooped up, keeping 升 apart from 斗; others hold that in oracle-bone script the two were a single graph that only later split. The first reading leads, so the picture is graded probable. 說文 says “升 is ten 龠; it follows 斗 and is also a pictograph”.
