“宗”由“宀”和“示”合成：外面是屋顶和两面墙，里面是立着的祖先神主“示”。屋子里放神主，就是宗庙。《说文》也说“宗，尊祖庙也”。要和“家”分开，看屋子里面装的是神主还是一头猪。

The graph joins 宀, a roof with two walls, to 示, the standing spirit tablet: a house with a tablet inside is an ancestral temple. 說文 agrees: "宗 is the temple where forebears are honoured." To tell it from 家, look at what the house contains — a tablet or a pig.
