“且”画的是什么，学界分歧很大：一种说法（王国维、陈剑）认为是俯视的“俎”——祭祀时盛肉的案板，身上的横就是案面；一种说法认为是立在宗庙里的祖先牌位；郭沫若则认为画的是男性生殖器，用来表示生育的源头。几种说法都有支持者，没有一种明显领先，所以标为学界有争议。卜辞里它就是“祖”，常写成“且乙”“且丁”这样的先王称呼。

What 且 depicts is genuinely contested: some (王國維, 陳劍) read a 俎 seen from above, the stand that held meat at a sacrifice, the bars being its boards; some an ancestral tablet set up in the temple; 郭沫若 read it as a phallus standing for the source of descent. Each has supporters and none clearly leads, so the badge says disputed. In divination records the graph simply writes 祖, "ancestor", in royal names such as 且乙 and 且丁.
