甲骨文“戌”把斧柄刻成一竖，把刃刻成柄旁一片宽阔的弯面。和“戈”比一比：“戈”的横枝是一条直的短横，“戌”的刃是一整片鼓出来的弧。商代人几乎只用它来记日子，写十二地支的第十一位，这是借音的用法，字形本身画的仍是兵器。

Oracle-bone 戌 cuts the haft as one upright and the blade as a broad bulging curve beside it. Compare 戈: its side branch is a straight short bar, while 戌 has a whole rounded blade. The Shang used the character almost only for dates, as the eleventh earthly branch — a loan for the sound; the drawing itself is still the weapon.
