“武”由“戈”和“止”两部分拼起来，上面是戈，下面是一只脚。这两个部件是什么，没有疑问；有争论的是它们合起来讲什么。《左传》里楚庄王说“止戈为武”，把“止”读成停止，意思是止住兵戈才叫武；现代古文字学者多数认为“止”在甲骨文里就是脚，合起来是持戈行进、出兵打仗。两种讲法都可以放在心里，字形本身画的是戈和脚。
「武」由「戈」和「止」兩部分拼起來，上面是戈，下面是一隻腳。這兩個部件是什麼，沒有疑問；有爭論的是它們合起來講什麼。《左傳》裡楚莊王說「止戈為武」，把「止」讀成停止，意思是止住兵戈才叫武；現代古文字學者多數認為「止」在甲骨文裡就是腳，合起來是持戈行進、出兵打仗。兩種講法都可以放在心裡，字形本身畫的是戈和腳。
武 is built from 戈 and 止 — a dagger-axe on top, a footprint below. What the two parts are is not in doubt; what they mean together is argued. In the Zuozhuan, King Zhuang of Chu read 止 as “stop” and said “stopping weapons is 武”. Modern palaeographers mostly read 止 as it is used in the oracle bones — a foot — so the pair means marching under arms, going out to fight. Either story can be kept in mind; the drawing itself is a weapon and a foot.
