把“麦”和“来”摆在一起看：上半截一模一样，都是那棵带叶的谷子；“麦”多的只是底下那只脚。这两个字在卜辞里分工反着来——画谷子的“来”被借去写“来去”的来，加脚的“麦”才用来写谷名。为什么加一只脚，至今没有定论，有人说脚是声符，有人说画的是人走进麦地。《说文》讲“麦，芒穀……从来，有穗者。从夕”，说的是小篆的拆法，脚已经写成了“夂”。至于这种谷子究竟是小麦还是大麦，卜辞本身不说；今天把它读作麦，靠的是后世的书和商代遗址里出土的谷粒。

Set 麥 beside 來 and the top halves are the same plant, leaves and all; 麥 adds the foot underneath. On the bones the two words swap duties: 來, which draws the grain, is borrowed to write “to come”, while 麥, the one with the foot, carries the name of the grain. Why a foot was added is still argued — some read it as a phonetic, others as someone walking into the standing crop. 說文 says “麥, the bearded grain … from 來, the one with ears; from 夕”, which describes the seal shape, where the foot has become 夂. Whether the grain itself was wheat or barley the divinations do not say; reading it as wheat rests on later books and on grain recovered from Shang sites.
