“用”画的究竟是哪一件器物，学界至今没有定论：有人说是木桶，是“桶”的本字；有人说是青铜的钟，和“甬”同源；也有人说是围起来的栅栏。三种说法都有人主张，谁也没有明显占上风，所以这里标为学界有争议。能确定的只是字形：一个上下出头的直框，里面有横有竖。卜辞里它最常见的用法是“用牲”，说的是拿哪种牲口来祭祀。

What object 用 draws is still unsettled. Some read it as a wooden pail, the original graph of 桶; some as a bronze bell, cognate with 甬; some as a fenced pen. All three are argued and none clearly leads, so the badge says the reading is disputed. What is certain is the shape: an upright frame whose sides overshoot, crossed by bars inside. In divination records its commonest job is 用牲 — which animal to use for the offering.
