寶 is an inventory of a character: the roof says where the things are kept, the jade and the shell say what they are. The jade is one upright through several crossbars, the same as the standalone 玉; the shell is the pointed valve of the standalone 貝. Which of the two sits on top can swap from piece to piece — a list of valuables keeps no order. 說文 says “寶 is what is precious; 宀, 王, 貝, with 缶 for sound.” Its 王 is really 玉, the two having grown alike in the seal script, and the 缶 is a later sound part that the bone does not yet carry.
