这个字骨片上刻得最多，怎么讲却最没有定论。一说把冠和宽横读作“辛”——那把宽头尖刃的刀，下面的两条腿是一个座架，合起来是一件立起来的器具。一说不分零件，把整幅看作一座带座的台，冠是台上的饰。《说文》讲的是小篆：“商，从外知內也。从㕯，章省聲”——它把下半读成“㕯”，把上半当作“章”的省写来记音，这一层分析建立在小篆的形上，骨片的搭配并不照着走。腿间那个方框也没有定论：有人读作“口”，有人只当它是填空的饰笔——它本来就时有时无。可以确定的只有写法：冠、宽横、两条外撇的腿，有时加一个框。

This is among the most often cut characters on the bones and among the least settled. One reading takes the crest with its wide bar for 辛, the broad-headed pointed blade, and the two legs below for a stand, the whole being an implement set upright. Another declines to split it up and reads the picture as a pedestalled platform with an ornament on top. 說文 is describing the seal form: “商 is knowing the inside from the outside; 㕯 with an abbreviated 章 for sound” — an analysis built on the seal shape, which the bone's own arrangement does not follow. The box between the legs is unsettled too: some read it as 口, others treat it as a filler stroke — it comes and goes from piece to piece. Only the writing is certain: crest, wide bar, two legs splaying out, and sometimes a box.
