多数古文字学者认为“辛”画的是一把带柄的刻刀或凿子，古人用它在人身上刺刻记号，所以“妾”“童”一类字里都藏着它；也有学者读作一种曲柄的刀，或者头上插的簪子。刻刀一说明显领先，所以标为较可能。商人借这个字来做第八个天干，只用读音。

Most palaeographers read 辛 as a handled graver or chisel — a tool used to cut marks into a person, which is why the same shape sits inside characters such as 妾 and 童. Others take it for a curved-handled knife, or for a hairpin. The graver reading clearly leads, hence the yellow badge. The Shang borrowed the sign, sound only, for the eighth stem.
