“庚”上面的“X”一般认为是提在手里的把柄，下面是器身。多数学者把它读作一件可以摇响的乐器，摇起来两旁的耳会发声；也有学者认为它是舂米的器具，还有人把它看作盾牌一类。乐器一说最常被引用，所以标为较可能。不论哪一说，商人用这个字只是给第七个天干取名。

The X on top of 庚 is generally taken for a handle held in the hand, with the body of an object beneath it. Most scholars read the object as an instrument that was shaken so that its side lugs sounded; others take it for a grain-husking tool, and a few for a kind of shield. The instrument reading is the one most often cited, hence the yellow badge. Whichever is right, the Shang used the sign only to name the seventh stem.
