Most scholars read the graph as 今 over 云 — the later 侌 — with 今 for the sound and 云 for the sense, used on the bones for an overcast sky; the 阜 on the left that makes 陰 appears only by the seal script. 《甲骨文編》, however, files the pointed-top cuttings and the flat-top cuttings under two different headword numbers, and whether they all write one word is not fully settled, so the badge is “probable”. 說文's gloss — “陰 is darkness: south of a river, north of a hill” — already describes the later positional sense.
