字形是一条长水道加上分出去的支流，这也是《说文》的讲法：“象水巠理之长”。另一种说法把左边那一笔看作“人”，认为全字画的是人在水里游泳，“永”就是“泳”的本字。从卜辞的形体看，多数写法只见水道和支流，看不出人形，所以这里按水道立说；游泳一说流传也很广，因此字形解释标为“较可能”。

The graph is one long watercourse with tributaries branching from it, which is also 說文's account: “it pictures the long veins of a stream.” A second reading takes the left stroke as 人 and sees a person swimming in water, making 永 the original graph for 泳. Across the attested forms most cuttings show only the channel and its branches with no human figure, so the app follows the watercourse reading; the swimming reading is widely held too, which is why the badge is “probable”.
