The graph is a house plus an opening: one outer stroke rises from the left wall, over the ridge and down the right wall, and the box inside it is the window. Beside the characters that carry only the 宀 roof, 向 draws the whole house, walls and all — and only 向 has the window. 說文 says “向 is a window opening to the north”, which is a Han-period rule about how houses should be laid out.
