这个形体画的是什么，有两种说法。《说文》把“求”列为“裘”（皮衣）的古文，于是有一说把竖画当衣身、两边的短撇当翻在外面的兽毛。唐兰、裘锡圭则指出：甲骨文、金文里“求”和“裘”用法分明，本是两个字，“求”画的是一只多足的小虫，就是后来“蛷”的初文，两边的短撇是它的脚。现代工具书多取后一说，但皮衣一说流传很广，所以这里的图形解释标为“较可能”。不论按哪一说，卜辞里的“求”都已经只作“求取、祈求”用了。

What the shape draws has two accounts. 說文 lists 求 as the old form of 裘 “fur robe”, and on that reading the upright is the garment and the short strokes are the pelt turned outwards. 唐蘭 and 裘錫圭 object that 求 and 裘 are used quite differently in the oracle-bone and bronze inscriptions and are two separate characters: 求, they argue, draws a many-legged creature, the original graph behind 蛷, and the strokes on both sides are its legs. Modern reference works mostly follow the second reading, while the fur-robe account is the more widely circulated one, so the picture is graded probable. On either reading, 求 on the bones already means only “to seek, to pray for”.
