“百”是在“白”字上加一横分化出来的数字，这一点学者的看法一致；“白”本身画的是什么却说法不一，有人说是大拇指的指甲，有人说是一粒米，也有人说是日光。因为下半的图形没有定论，这里标为较可能的解释。认字时抓住两点就够了：尖头的轮廓，加上头顶那一横。

Scholars agree that the numeral 百 was split off from 白 by adding one bar. What 白 itself pictures is not agreed: a thumbnail, a grain of rice, or sunlight have all been proposed. Because the lower shape is unsettled the badge says "probable". For reading the glyph, two things suffice: the pointed outline and the bar across its top.
