左边带杈的是被割的草木，右边那道大弯钩，一般认为是镰刀一类的割器，所以《甲骨文编》把它隶定作“刈”，读作割草。不过这个字的释读还没有完全定下来，工具书里也没有哪位学者的具体说法可以引用。《说文》讲“乂，芟艸也”，“刈”是它加“刀”的异体，正好和这个画面对得上。因为释读未定，图形解释标为“较可能”。

The forked thing on the left is the growth being cut; the big hook on the right is generally taken to be a sickle-like blade, which is why 甲骨文編 transcribes the graph as 刈, “to mow”. The identification is not fully settled, and the reference works carry no named scholar's account of it. 說文 glosses 乂 as “to cut grass” and gives 刈, with the knife added, as its variant, which fits the picture. Because the reading is still open, the picture is graded as probable.
