Count the roads running out: four, with the middle left open — that is the junction. Some carvings cut the four corners as right angles, which makes the lanes look wider. Today's 行 comes straight from this picture, which is why characters written with 彳 mostly have to do with roads and walking. 說文 says “行 is a person's pace; from 彳 and 亍”, but that is a Han-dynasty reading of a seal form that had already split in two.
