左边带杈的是被割的草木，右边那道大弯钩，多数学者认为是镰刀一类的割器，所以《甲骨文编》把它隶定作“刈”，读作割草。不过这个字的释读还没有完全定下来：《甲骨文字集释》就把相关材料的一部分列在“存疑”里。《说文》讲“乂，芟艸也”，“刈”是它加“刀”的异体，正好和这个画面对得上。因为释读未定，图形解释标为“较可能”。

The forked thing on the left is the growth being cut; the big hook on the right is generally taken to be a sickle-like blade, which is why 甲骨文編 transcribes the graph as 刈, “to mow”. The identification is not fully settled, though — 甲骨文字集釋 files part of the material under “doubtful”. 說文 glosses 乂 as “to cut grass” and gives 刈, with the knife added, as its variant, which fits the picture. Because the reading is still open, the picture is graded as probable.
