多数学者认为这画的是一件悬挂着敲打的乐器，所以字形上端总有挂钩、腹上总有箍带；至于具体是哪一种（钟、铃、还是瓦制的鼓），说法不一。《说文》另讲“艸木至南方有枝任也”，把它说成草木，那是按小篆字形附会的。“南”用来记方向，是借音的用法，和画的东西没有关系。因为对所画之物还没有定论，图形解释标为“较可能”。

Most scholars take this for an instrument hung up to be struck, which is why there is always a hook at the top and a band round the body; which instrument it is — a bell, a chime or a clay drum — is not agreed. 說文 instead explains it as “plants putting out branches when they reach the south”, reading the seal shape rather than the picture. Using 南 for the direction is a loan of the sound and has nothing to do with the object drawn. Because what the object is remains open, the picture is graded as probable.
