把“函”和“矢”放在一起看就明白了：中间那支箭正是“矢”，外面多了一圈袋子的轮廓，有的写法还在袋子左边刻出一个提环，是挂在身上的带子。《说文》把小篆的“圅”讲成“舌也”，那是汉代人对已经走样的字形的解释，甲骨文里它画的仍是箭袋。

Set 函 beside 矢 and it explains itself: the thing in the middle is the arrow, and what is new is the outline of the case around it, sometimes with a carrying loop cut on the left. The Shuowen glosses the seal form as “tongue”, but that is a Han reading of an already distorted shape; in the oracle bones the picture is still a quiver.
