That the drawing is a shield is not in question; which later character it stands for is. The 甲骨文編 and most dictionaries read it as 盾, while some scholars take the Shang graph to name a different piece of defensive gear — hence the probable badge. Compare 干: that is a forked pole, while 盾 has a whole board.
