甲骨文“甲”有两种写法：一个光秃秃的十字，和把十字圈进方框里。它画的是什么，有两种说法：多数字典（如徐中舒《甲骨文字典》）认为画的是皮革甲片和片上的缀线；《说文》则说它是草木种子外面的硬壳。前一种说法在古文字学界更通行，所以这里标为“较可能”。和“田”比一比：“田”的横竖穿到边框，把方块分成四小块；“甲”的十字浮在框子中间，不碰到边。

Oracle-bone 甲 comes two ways: a bare cross, and the same cross closed inside a box. Two accounts of the picture compete: most dictionaries (Xu Zhongshu's 甲骨文字典 among them) read a plate of leather armour with its crossed stitching, while the Shuowen takes it for the hard husk of a seed. The armour reading leads among palaeographers, so the picture is graded probable. Compare 田: there the lines run right across to the frame and cut it into four plots, while in 甲 the cross floats free in the middle and never touches the sides.
