中间那条弯线就是“人”，身旁的短画才是这个字的关键。这些短画是什么，有两种讲法：多数古文字学者认为是披在身上的甲片，所以“介”就是披甲的人；另一种讲法（杨树达、沈培）认为两旁的点只是指出“在两者之间”，所以“介”本义是介乎、介于，《说文》把字拆成“从八从人”、讲作“界限”，走的也是这条路。两说并存，甲片一说在讲商代兵器时更常引用，所以这里标为“较可能”。和“水”比一比：“水”中间是一条弯曲的水道，两旁的点是水珠。

The curved line in the middle is 人, a person; the short marks beside it are what matters. Two accounts compete: most palaeographers read them as armour plates worn on the body, so 介 is a man in armour, while 楊樹達 and 沈培 take the marks simply as pointing out “between”, making the original sense “to lie between” — 說文's split into 八 plus 人, glossed “boundary”, goes the same way. Both readings are current; the armour one is the more often cited when Shang weapons are the subject, so the picture is graded probable. Compare 水: there the middle line is a winding channel and the side marks are droplets.
