甲骨文“占”是“卜”加“口”：“卜”是烧灼后龟甲上爆出的裂纹，一竖带一斜；“口”是说话的嘴。有的写法把两样都圈在一个框里，那个框就是卜甲本身。《说文》说“占，视兆问也，从卜从口”，正是看着兆纹发问、判断的意思。
甲骨文「占」是「卜」加「口」：「卜」是燒灼後龜甲上爆出的裂紋，一豎帶一斜；「口」是說話的嘴。有的寫法把兩樣都圈在一個框裡，那個框就是卜甲本身。《說文》說「占，視兆問也，从卜从口」，正是看著兆紋發問、判斷的意思。
Oracle-bone 占 is 卜 plus 口: 卜 is the crack that springs open when the shell is burned, an upright with a branch off it, and 口 is the mouth that speaks. Some forms enclose both inside a frame, and that frame is the shell itself. 《說文》 glosses 占 as asking by looking at the crack, from 卜 and 口 — exactly what the picture shows.
